THE LION FLAG

 

Our National flag is the Lion Flag. It has an emblem of an artistic lion on a maroon background. It has four colours; yellow, maroon, green and orange. The lion is holding a sword in its right paw and is facing the left towards the flag pole. In the four corners of the flag ther are four bo-leaves. The emblem of the lion is in yellow colour. Ther are two stripes of green and orange in the lion flag. They are on the left of the flag. 

each element of the flag has a specific meanings. The leaves represent Buddhist loving kindness, compassion, equanimity and happiness. The lion represents bravery and the Sinhslees people. The sword is bravery, curly represents hair wisdom, the tail is Noble Eightfold Path and the beard the purity of words.

Member of Parliament for Batticaloa, Mudaliyar A. Sinhalebbe, suggested in Parliamenton January 16, 1948 , that the Lion Flag should be accepted as the national flag. In 1948, the flag was adopted as the national flag of the Dominion of Ceylon, undergoing two changes; one in 1953 and a redesign in 1972.

When the flag is hoisted in all States buldings on national days it reminds people of the spirit of the nation. It is one of the oldest flags in the world. There are rules regarding the use of the national flag laid down by the government. Every citizen of Sri Lanka must stand up in respect when the National  Flag is hoisted. So do visitors to this country.
